We use natural and synthetic perfumery ingredients which are readily available from the market, or exclusively produced internally and/or developed jointly with selected partners. These proprietary and captive ingredients belong to Eurofragance and are available solely to our Perfumers. Whether a raw material is natural or synthetic, we favor suppliers with a positive sustainability track record.

Having a broad palette is good, but what’s even better is being able to offer our fragrance creators the best possible ingredients, and preferably sustainable ones. To these, we are adding our own captives and technical ingredients that deliver sought-after benefits.

A Balanced Palette ThatRespects the Planet

Our extensive palette includes natural and synthetic ingredients. While the word “synthetic” can be a little daunting to some, in reality, in the industry, synthetic materials are prevalent and necessary from an environmental point of view. Sustainability speaking, a synthetic ingredient offers real benefits, including the reduction of land and resources usage. And today, not all synthetic ingredients are petroleum-based. Of course, we love the natural materials in our palette, but the need remains to source conscientiously and always keep in mind our environmental and ethical impact.

Purchasing perfumery raw materials is a relationship business.  The close connections we have developed with your supplying partners over the years have served us well, enabling us to acquire ingredients in even in the most challenging times.  Our suppliers know our expectations when it comes to quality, but we now ask them to also adhere to our ethical values.  All Eurofragance suppliers are expected to sign our "Code of Ethics and Behaviour."

We visit our suppliers on site to see for ourselves what measures they have put in place to be considered sustainable. In other instances, we rely on their certifying agencies such as ISO and SEDEX, or protocols set by the OECD.

ICON Is About Craftinga High Quality,Sustainable Palette

Our strategy for an even more qualitative and sustainable palette is named: ICON. The word “icon” carries positive imagery and is an enviable concept, but for us it also stands for “Innovation,” “Commitment,” “Origin” and “Nature.” This strategic program aims to identify admirable perfumery ingredients that offer exceptional olfactive qualities and that are sustainable. Our ICON Program is perfectly aligned with our corporate ESG philosophy and can serve as a lever to get more and more of our suppliers onboard the sustainability movement.

A Seven-step Process

To be considered in our ICON Program, an ingredient must overcome a certain number of hurdles. A team made up of Perfumers and members of the Compliance Department evaluate each potential raw material in a seven-step process. Certain steps relate to quality and performance, while others have to do with safety and sustainability. Only exceptional ingredients make it all the way through this selective screening.

A Collection of Collections

Once an ingredient has successfully cleared the selection process, it is assigned to an ICON Collection. There are seven different collections, but a raw material can only be catalogued in one collection. Each collection reflects certain olfactive characteristics and origins of the ingredient. The task of determining the most appropriate collection to properly showcase an iconic raw material is like a museum curator, preparing an art exhibit. The collections are:

Sustainability Makes IngredientsEven More Admirable

At Eurofragance, sustainability is our moral compass. Every decision is taken in light of this value, as is the case when selecting ingredients for our global palette. We clearly favor raw materials that have a sustainable pedigree. This is a sine qua non for making it into one of our ICON Collections. Ingredients that make the cut offer at least one sustainability value. At present, we judge candidates against five different sustainability values:

Capturing the Essence andIdentity of an Ingredient

We issue an ID (identity) card for each ICON ingredient. In effect, we gather on a one-pager the pertinent perfumery-related information that pertains to an ingredient. An ICON ID Card always contains the official reference name and number of the ingredient, a few lines of storytelling and a Perfumer’s quote on what he, or she, likes about the ingredient and what it brings to a fragrance composition. Some technical information is included, and importantly what collection the ingredient belongs to and what sustainability value(s) it offers.

Why We Do All This

ICON is a key, corporate strategic project at Eurofragance as we feel that many have much to gain from it. First, it’s about excellence. We must provide our creation teams with the admirable ingredients that will enable them to design admirable and… hopefully iconic fragrances. This means that your brands benefit directly from superior perfume creations that will, ultimately, delight your consumers. Added to this, the positive sustainability record of ICON ingredients allows you to make the type of claims that your consumers care about. ICON helps differentiate your brand in terms of its quality and sustainability.
