Euphorion®: A Fresh Perspective

Magdalena Rey and Felipe San Juan, Eurofragance teammates, discussing in laboratory setting.

The word “freshness” is used, overused and even misused in perfumery. While freshness is an important descriptor to describe the olfactive characteristic of certain ingredients, perfumes, environments… the adjective has become somewhat of a catchphrase. How many times have we heard “it smells fresh,” when someone doesn’t know how to describe a fragrance, but they like its scent?

Natural and Synthetic Ingredients That Smell Fresh

From a western world perspective, we can—more or less—agree on perfumery raw materials known to deliver freshness. This includes certain citruses, spices and fruits such as lemon, petitgrain, watermelon, pink pepper or ginger to name a handful. Aromatic plants are also perfect candidates to deliver a dose of freshness. Likewise, the smell of cut grass, tomato leaf or the stem of a green banana evokes freshness of a different type for some, while woody notes like cedarwood or ambergris are considered fresh to others. The above is far from an exhaustive list, they are just a few examples, and we shouldn’t forget plants such as mint and eucalyptus that trigger a sensation of freshness in our trigeminal nerves.

Natural environments and the outdoors can also inspire freshness to our noses. The iodine-filled air of the seaside, a pine forest, a mountain breeze are a few olfactive illustrations. These ingredients and naturescapes are so inspiring to Perfumers that many a fragrance house has undertaken the challenge of creating synthetic perfumery materials capable of delivering similar kinds of freshness. With its marine, watermelon, ozonic notes, Calone is a prime example of a fresh-smelling, man-made ingredient. Ambroxan, the synthetic rendition of ambergris, is another case in the woody, ambery musk family. While there are plenty more examples of synthetic ingredients that connote freshness, Euphorion® is a newcomer that takes the sensation of natural, green freshness to new olfactive heights.

Refreshing News, Euphorion® Has Arrived

R&D Scientists, of our Innovation Center, working hand in hand with Perfumers, have enabled Eurofragance to launch its third captive ingredient in three years. This new, synthetic ingredient, named Euphorion®, offers a pleasantly different take on freshness. As its name suggests, our new material is uplifting, exhilarating, energizing and, in our eyes—or noses, to be more precise—even exciting. It is also interesting to note that in ancient Greek mythology, Euphorion was the son of Helen of Troy and Achilles, or when beauty meets strength. Currently, there is nothing like this new captive on the perfumery market; it has a scent profile like none other. Euphorion® offers a potent, green citrusy freshness in fragrance compositions, even when used at minimal doses.

Perfumers have found that Euphorion® not only delivers a sensation of natural freshness to their fragrances, but that it also boosts the freshness of other notable ingredients, in particular those of the citrus, aromatic, spice and fruity olfactive families. Our innovative material complements these ingredients and blends seamlessly with yet other raw materials. Fougère notes become greener and leathery ones more aromatic with Euphorion® in the mix. Interestingly, some Perfumers have noted a second olfactive trait in Euphorion® that relates more to savory foods and the taste of umami. There is an aspect of in it reminiscent of roasted nuts, oily seeds and cured ham. For fragrance designers, this material now provides them with an unusual alternative to the well-known sweet gourmand notes.

For its uncommon and superior olfactive qualities, Euphorion® has been included in our ICON Program. ICON is a Eurofragance strategic initiative to further improve the quality and sustainability of our global palette. Euphorion® has become the first synthetic entry in our ICON Captives collection. It deserves this distinction for its particular scent characteristics, and because it offers appreciable sustainability attributes. Euphorion® is green in more ways than one.

Suitable Applications for Euphorion®

Our first captive, L’Âme du Bois® was destined to the world of fine fragrances, niche perfumes and upscale cosmetics. Our second captive, Verdenix®, a technical ingredient, was designed to combat foul smells in malodor counteracting home and personal care products. Our third captive, Euphorion®, has a much more open playing field. This captive is a game for pretty much any fragranced product where freshness matters. It can be considered in fine perfumes (e.g., colognes), personal care products (e.g., shower gels), home care applications (e.g., all-purpose cleaners) or in air care formats (e.g., air freshener sprays), just to list a few obvious examples.

More to Come

The resources we have put into the development of proprietary materials, in terms of talent and investments, has paid off, but there is more to come. We can already say that our future captives will be highly innovative, bring real added value to our palette and in keeping with our sustainability values. In the meantime, we invite you to learn more about Euphorion®, our other proprietary captives and our overall raw materials strategy by visiting our Selections website page. The word “freshness” is used, overused and even misused in perfumery.
