Development

A creative and efficient development process

We feel strongly about developing the one fragrance that will perfectly answer your brief.  Perfumes are not interchangeable, and they don’t all carry the same message, benefit or promise.  In each product category, the Fragrance Development Manager (FDM) will guide the Perfumer and other team members to the completion of your project, collaborating with specialists in their local network and other Creative Centers.

When you fall in love with one of our fragrances, it’s because there was perfect chemistry between different Eurofragance professionals who understood one another perfectly, and were able to work creatively and efficiently together.

Fragrance
development cycle

1. From brief to activation

A fragrance begins with a story

  • Whether it’s a project initiated by you, or a proactive approach from our side, the reason for creating a fragrance is usually driven by the desire to tell a story, or answer a consumer need.
  • Once the Key Account Manager, with input from all stakeholders, has issued a brief and assigned key responsibilities, an FDM takes on the lead of the development project.
  • The FDM is the central actor of your project and will accompany the development of your perfume until submission day.
  • Because every project is different, the FDM will reach out to different internal specialists who will need to get involved.

2. One fragrance, many hands

Good team chemistry is important

  • Individuals with different roles will be called upon for the expertise they have in their field to bring your project to fruition.
  • The FDM will guide the Perfumer in the creation of your fragrance, but will also rely on the know-how and creativity of other colleagues in every Creative Center.
  • The design of your scent will incorporate consumer insights, technical expertise, sensory findings and maybe even a captive developed by our R&D team.
  • Because everyone has a key role to play, the final result will be larger than the sum of its parts.

3. When artistry and science meet

Perfumery is an intangible artform

  • Fragrances might be invisible and intangible, but every single project is real, and is approached with a fresh perspective and can take on varying forms.
  • Our Creation and Innovation teams work on projects across all product categories, ranging from a niche fine fragrance to a mass market fabric softener via a top selling scented candle.
  • Because each product has a different formula, it requires our creators to craft a fragrance perfectly suited to your product and its base.
  • Regardless of the development challenges we face, our objective will always be a finished perfume that is safe to enjoy and tells a compelling story.

4. Playing by the rules

We handle complexity with ease

  • It will take numerous iterations, smelling sessions and reworks, before Perfumer and FDM agree that they have winning proposition.
  • But its’s not over yet; an ITM Manager will conduct stability tests on your perfume to guarantee it doesn’t separate, discolor or change olfactively over time.
  • Regulatory teams then step in to ensure your perfume is safe and complies with international regulations and local legislation.
  • A great scent must perform and conform—this is simply non-negotiable.

5. Your fragrance is ready to shine

Going the extra mile before we submit

  • In certain cases, the FDM will proactively involve ITM scientists to propose different formulas or ways your fragrance can be enjoyed by consumers.
  • The Marketing team will work on a submission presentation, while Graphic Designers might be also called in to think up what design elements can further bring your project to life.
  • Ultimately, the fragrance we create for you must answer the brief, and should help differentiate your brand in the marketplace.
  • The final step—and most rewarding for all stakeholders—happens when we successfully present a finished fragrance that will delight you and your consumers.

Leveraging our network of Creative Centers to develop winning fragrances

Eurofragance has Creative Centers in Barcelona, Dubai, Mexico, Singapore, India and Indonesia.  While each entity has acquired an expertise in certain product segments and regional market preferences, you can call on us for your fragrance development project in any of these six hubs.  In each Creative Center, you will find Perfumers, Marketers, Scientists… working with the same palette and procedures.  The Creative Centers are all connected, meaning that you can benefit from the expertise of Eurofragancers working on the other side of the planet.  For instance if the creation team in Indonesia is working on a Middle-Eastern type fragrance brief, they can count on the help and input from the team in Dubai.

The needed facilities and equipment in all six Creative Centers

With our expansion into new markets, our wish was for all local teams to have access to the same tools and facilities.  Today, this is pretty much the case across all six Creative Centers.  Every site has application labs, analysis labs, GCMS equipment and evaluation cabins or rooms of different sizes.  We have evaluation cabins and rooms for Air Care products, separate rooms for Home and Personal Care products to avoid cross contamination.  In certain instances, we have spaces filled with washing machines, or dryers, but also a drying area to hang handwashed laundry.  Because precision matters, in some instances, we have separate rooms to evaluate liquid detergents and fabric softeners.  And, we even have an actual hair salon to evaluate Hair Care products.

The central role of Fragrance Development Managers (FDMs)

Put simply, FDMs guide the development of fragrances from inception to final product, through evaluations, selections and improvements along the way.  Within the Creative Center, FDMs are at the hub of your development project.  They know raw materials by heart, as well as what ingredients and macro trends are up-and-coming.  This knowledge, along with extensive experience and market data provides them with the confidence to trust their intuition to complete your project.  Hours will be spent smelling, evaluating, tweaking and smelling again.  Once finished, their fragrance will be presented to you and the verdict will be yours.

Innovation and technical expertise for optimal fragrance experiences

A great fragrance is not only about creating a perfect blend of beautiful ingredients, it is also a great deal of technical know-how and innovative problem solving.  At particular steps of the development of a fragrance, different experts with specific scientific backgrounds are called upon for their competencies.  They each have a precise role to play and collaborate with Perfumers, FDMs and other professionals to ultimately deliver an outstanding finished fragrance.

At the heart of your project: your consumer

When we develop a fragrance for your consumers, we approach the project from their perspective.  Of course, we want to meet their needs and please their senses, but often, we must anticipate their desires with scents that go beyond their imagination or expectations.  To do this, our FDMs, Perfumers, ITMs and Marketing Specialists immerse themselves in your brand’s universe to fully understand your target, market and competition.  Working together they can, for instance, imagine new product concepts that will be matched with the most adequate fragrance.  We also pour over market research studies and look for new product opportunities for you to consider, and for us to fragrance.  The expertise we can offer you goes well beyond fragrance development.

Sustainable fragrance development

Sustainability has become a mantra at Eurofragance; it permeates every department and the Creation team is no exception.  Our Perfumers and FDMs pay great attention to “making scents, caring for people and planet.”  In our database of raw materials, we have identified the ingredients that offer verified sustainability values—and we continue to work with suppliers to expand this list.  FDMs and Perfumers naturally gravitate to these ingredients because it is the right thing to do, and because it also allows you to make meaningful product claims that matter to your consumers.

Fragrance Analysts

A Fragrance Analyst analyzes samples of market products, customer samples or raw materials by gas chromatography in order to reconstitute its formula.  The data collected is important, as it allows one to identify new creation trends.  It is also precious information when Perfumers have to modify their own formulas, and they want to ensure that their new composition delivers a similar olfactive experience.  Fragrance Analysts interact with our Perfumers, FDMs, Quality Control specialists and the scientists in our different labs.

Technical Perfumers

At Eurofragance, Technical Perfumers are called “Scentinels,” referring to one of their responsibilities: to be the guardians of the perfumery palette.  Technical Perfumers manage our 1,200 raw materials—the building blocks of a fragrance.  They also ensure that the profile of a perfume remains the same, if it has to be modified because of a poor harvest impacting availability of a raw material, or because of regulatory changes.  Technical Perfumers also collaborate with R&D scientists on the development of new captives.

Sensory Analysts

In order to assess the performance of a fragrance against different quantitative criteria, it is possible to conduct tests with a panel of trained experts.  These panels are run by a Sensory Analyst who develops sensory protocols adapted to the property or benefit to be assessed, for instance fragrance long lastingness, intensity malodor counteraction, blooming to name just a few.  The Sensory Analyst then treats the data using statistical tools to deliver sensory reports for internal stakeholders or external customers.
