Barcelona, June 2, 2026 – Eurofragance, the multinational fragrance house, has collaborated with the MartiDerm dermocosmetic laboratory to develop a cosmetics collection aimed at improving the quality of life of individuals with trimethylaminuria, a metabolic disorder commonly known as fish odor syndrome. As part of this social initiative, the two companies have launched a website under the name “Cosmetics and Fragrances That Change Lives”, where individuals can request the products free of charge and only pay for shipping.
The fish-like odor may be caused by carnitine administered to patients requiring high doses, such as those with carnitine transporter deficiency, as well as by trimethylaminuria. This incurable metabolic condition means that the body is unable to process certain nitrogen-containing compounds. This results in a characteristic odor reminiscent of fish.
This partnership combines Eurofragance’s perfumery expertise with MartiDerm’s dermatological formulation capabilities to improve the lives of those affected by this syndrome. It has resulted in three products—a cologne, a lotion and a body oil—available in two fragrance options: citrus and green tea, according to user preference. These formulations effectively neutralize the strong odor experienced by individuals undergoing high-dose carnitine treatment or those with trimethylaminuria.
A groundbreaking collaboration between medical research, perfumery and dermocosmetics
The collaboration project began in 2021 following the diagnosis of several pediatric cases at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona, the Catalan leading center in pediatrics and research. Pediatrician Beatriz Mínguez reached out to Eurofragance to initiate a joint study aimed at finding a solution for fish odor syndrome. The condition typically manifests and is diagnosed in childhood. Although it persists throughout life, early detection enables better monitoring and patient education.
“Perfumery has a transformative power that goes beyond evoking emotions. This project clearly demonstrates that a fragrance can be much more than a scent: it can provide relief, confidence and well-being. Our goal has always been to find a solution that improves the quality of life of people living with this condition. It has been highly rewarding to be part of this collaboration and to achieve such a positive social impact,” says Magdalena Rey, Technical Perfumer at Eurofragance and project lead.
The study, which included 20 volunteers who evaluated the products, concluded that 80% of participants achieved near-complete odor neutralization when using the three products together. Overall satisfaction exceeded 80% during the warmer months, with nearly half of the participants reporting high satisfaction. These results confirm the products’ effectiveness.
While the combined use of the three products is recommended for optimal results, each product can be used independently and still deliver a noticeable improvement.
Accessible innovation with social impact
Upon completing the study, MartiDerm joined the collaboration to enable the production of the cosmetics that can now be requested via the website: Cosmetics and Fragrances That Change Lives (in Spanish). Currently, the products are only shipped within Spain.
“At MartiDerm, we understand cosmetics as a tool for health and well-being. By joining this project, we can further our social commitment by providing tangible solutions to individuals facing challenging situations due to less common conditions. Our purpose is clear: to improve people’s quality of life through science and innovation,” states Montserrat Marimón, Chief Sustainability & Operations Officer at MartiDerm.
This social initiative opens new opportunities to improve the quality of life for individuals affected by syndromes such as this one, offering hope to patients for whom body odor represents a significant social and psychological burden. In their daily lives, they may experience social isolation, insecurity and resulting psychological distress. Reducing this odor significantly enhances their overall quality of life.
The project is part of the Corporate Social Responsibility strategies of both MartiDerm and Eurofragance, reinforcing their commitment to improving both the planet and people’s lives through the cosmetics and fragrance industry.
