Oriental perfumery: The exotic nature of Eurofragance

It’s a fact! Smells are intrinsically linked to a culture. It has been proven that tradition, gastronomy, climate, etc. influence the way we perceive and interpret smells. The smell of lavender, typical of Provence, does not have the same connotations for a French person as it does to people from Turkey, who are more accustomed to the piquant smell of spices. At Eurofragance we understand these differences and create fragrances designed to delight different target audiences.

Although our fragrances are found in more than 60 countries, our deep understanding of raw materials and consumer preferences in the Middle East and the Gulf area has made us a leading company in this market.

Oriental perfumery palette

How do the oriental and western palettes differ? Truth be told, there is a growing trend to use exotic raw ingredients in perfumes all over the world. One example of this is the famous sandalwood, which shows up in extremely refined fragrances, adding its characteristic woody, creamy, velvety nuances. With a gently warm, floral side, it is used as an ingredient in fine perfumery and cosmetics around the world.

However, there are some ingredients that appeal far more in the oriental market. One of these is oudh, one of our favourite raw materials, and the star ingredient in our Nomad Tales collection. Also known as black gold by perfumers, oudh is an extremely expensive raw material used only in the perfumery industry. This essence is produced when the Aquilaria trees, known as Agar, become infected by fungus. This ‘natural accident’ occurs when wounds appear in the tree bark, and the tree produces a dense, dark and fragrant resin that, once extracted, has a unique smell: powerful, woody, smoky and animal. This resin has been burnt in the Persian Gulf for hundreds of years as a way of welcoming guests. If you like fresh, fruity and floral fragrances, then oudh is not for you. Nevertheless, it is turning up more and more frequent in the Western World. You may have smelt a perfume that contains oudh, albeit in tiny doses.

We also use spicy scents like saffron and cardamom essential oil to give fragrances a more oriental appeal. And while we are on the subject of combining raw ingredients, we must mention shamama attar -another of the stars of Nomad Tales-, a mixture of wild flowers, aromatic plants, spices and wood, which is distilled in sandalwood. Each producer changes the proportion of the ingredients, which is sometimes a family secret.

We are looking back over 2018 with a mixture of nostalgia and excitement. It was a magnificent year for us and our stakeholders. We started the year on a high note, when Laurent Mercier took the helm as our new CEO replacing founder partner Santiago Sabatés. Laurent’s vision materialised in strategic movements which, coupled with the efforts of all our Eurofragancers, took us to success after success. Here is a summary of the main milestones:

Expansion and Optimisation

A year has been long enough to achieve a lot at Eurofragance. We have grown and evolved both inside and out. On the one hand, since April, our Barcelona headquarters have had an improved comprehensive fragrance evaluation area. On the other, we have increased and strengthened our presence in America by acquiring Fragrance Design, an Atlanta based company, and optimising our production plant in Mexico. We are particularly proud of these two achievements.

In addition, our R&D department developed an ambitious research and innovation plan which resulted in two very interesting products: Our Eurocaps™ encapsulated fragrances for fabric conditioners have revolutionised the Home Care sector and the first Euro-MC™ Fragrances line is an innovative technology that neutralises unpleasant smells.

Trade fairs and creative projects

Trade fairs were also crucial in 2018. Our Eurofragancers learned, presented and discovered the latest trends at the industry’s leading events: Esxence, Detex, In Cosmetic Global and we’ll never forget the exciting moments we spent at BeautyWorld Middle East! Our perfumers surprised all our visitors at the presentation of our long-awaited Nomad Tales collection. We poured all our creative talent into this project. But wait! The Nomad Tales journey didn’t stop there, because 2019 will bring us even more new things from those fabulous faraway lands. Take note!

And while we’re on the subject of exciting creative projects, we mustn’t forget “És possible”, the fragrance created to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation. Our perfumer, Belén García, created this masterpiece with ingredients that represent the values of the organisation in a souvenir perfume.

Winter is time for social gatherings: meals with friends, corporate dinners, family reunions… But when the temperatures plunge and the nights draw in early, it’s tempting to snuggle under a nice warm blanket rather than venture out. Never fear! Don’t let the cold affect your social life! Bring it home! And when your guests arrive, delight them with enchanting scents. How? Eurofragance specialises in filling the air with unique moments. If you want your home to smell of winter, select these ingredients and make winter your favourite time of year.

Warming fragrances

Chocolate. Who doesn’t love savouring a cup of hot chocolate when it’s cold outside? Now is also the time for treats like chocolate nougat and brownies. That’s why we’ve chosen cocoa as a perfect ingredient for giving your house a Christmassy atmosphere. Pure cocoa has woody, almost bitter nuances, often sweetened with touches of vanilla. Our suggestion: Combine the intense bitterness of cocoa with vanilla splashes of tonka bean and add some orange for contrast – a classic combo that never fails to please.

Cinnamon. If chocolate is the king of the season, then cinnamon is the queen. It’s a sweet yet warm and spicy fragrance that can transport anyone to a warm fireside in an instant. The team at Eurofragrance is in love with the versatility of cinnamon, which can either be the prominent note of a fragrance or an interesting addition.  In an earlier post, we talked about the spicy trends appearing for the coming season. So pay attention!

Ginger. Another Christmas favourite is ginger, an ingredient with well-known year-round benefits, commonly found in Christmas sweetmeats like gingerbread. Not usually the main ingredient, its acidic, spicy chords really attract attention. Our perfumers use this raw material in two very different types of fragrance: either combined with oriental-type creations with spices like myrrh and cardamom or in clean fragrances with other, rare citrus fruits. If you want a warm, winter atmosphere, we recommend the former.

Pine. Bringing to mind the nostalgic scent of the Christmas tree, this is a must-have in your home during winter. Pine has a heady, natural, fresh, aromatic, unique scent reminiscent of the pure, fresh air of the mountains. The essence of pine needles gives out a fresh, woody smell that evokes Christmas like nothing else.

Cranberry. Last but not least, there’s cranberry. A delicious accompaniment to roast turkey, it is a Christmas standard in the United States, although less frequently in Europe. That’s why in many parts of the world, cranberry means Christmas. The sweet, fruity scent smells even better with sumptuous notes of cocoa and vanilla.

We all know that walking into a wonderful-smelling room can immediately change your mood. What’s more, if the fragrance is based on plants’ essential oils, it can also be relaxing and banish stress. Even if you don’t have time to go to a specialist aromatherapy centre, you can still benefit from this aromatherapy in the office, when you’re doing the housework, or at the gym or library. Fortunately, the aromatherapy market has expanded so much during the last two years that creating your own treatment is much simpler. All you need are some essential oils and a diffuser. But be warned! Choosing your diffuser and oils is not as easy as you might think, because you’ll want to try them all.

There are diffusers with different functions, some are programmable and there are even portable versions. You can even carry your diffuser with you in your handbag and create a different ambience according to your mood or your needs.

Some of these devices come built into humidifiers and air purifiers to keep your skin and throat hydrated. Others emit soft light and soothing sounds and come in avant-garde designs that fit perfectly with any type of decoration. But what they all have in common is that they release natural fragrances that make you feel good instantly. Who could ask for more? What are the scents of positive energy, scientific rigour and humanity? The Pasqual Maragall Foundation is turning ten years old, and our perfumer, Belén García, has created a fragrance based on its principles.

Moments in the past sometimes return in the most unexpected ways. And when they arrive through the sense of smell, a unique sensation is produced. Has it ever happened to you? It’s like returning to your grandparents’ home on vacation through the odour of burnt wood in a fireplace at Christmas. Or going back to your wedding day when you smell the fragrance of the irises that surrounded you at that very special moment. And it is memories related to the senses and emotions that endure the most in the end.

Helping remember memories since 2014

This year, the Pasqual Maragall Foundation is celebrating ten years dedicated to research against Alzheimer’s disease. And, as contributors to the entity since 2014, here at Eurofragance we have joined their celebration by creating a perfume called “És possible.” However, it is not just a regular perfume. It is a fragrance inspired by the entity’s values and principles, also reminding us of the strong bond existing between the sense of smell and memory. That is why it was given the same name as the Foundation’s slogan on its anniversary.

The creation of “És possible” has been a very stimulating creative process. Our creative team, with the perfumer Belén García and FDM Francesca Sideri at the helm, have used the foundation’s values as a point of reference in order to choose the raw materials to make up the fragrance. In addition to this, the techniques used to extract the essences also speak of what the Pasqual Maragall Foundation is all about. Do you want to know what this scent is like? Then keep reading!

What is the scent of “És possible”?

“És possible” smells like the positive energy and optimism that the Foundation uses on an everyday basis to fight against Alzheimer’s. Values masterfully represented by the citric notes of tangerine, pink grapefruit and sweet orange perceived in the composition’s top. To express scientific innovation and creativity, the Eurofragancers team has included equally innovative ingredients and techniques in the fragrance, including CO2 distillation of pink pepper and coffee extract. Then come the white flowers, selected to represent fondness, closeness and the human warmth which Alzheimer’s patients receive from family members and loved ones when they are stricken with this disease. And we could not leave out scientific rigour and social responsibility, flagships of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation. The heartiness and might of vetiver and cedarwood and a touch of amber are the ingredients which tell us about the strength of the work performed by the researchers.

The outcome is a gift to those attending the Foundation’s tenth anniversary gala: a perfume that can be used to create unique memories.
